Definiton of Approach

Lets define Approach as a strategy to complete a hand (with 8 pts. requirements). Generally, it is much safer to aim a hand containing 8+ pts. element. The other option is try to complete a hand on combination of bits-and-pieces (like All Chows + All Simples + Last Tile = 8 pts.).

Some Conclusions on Main Approaches

10 top Approaches (mostly mutually exclusive strategies) cover ~89% of all cases. They are:

Please, note that 3 Chows (Straights, both Pure and Mixed) require only 9 tiles of your hand which gives to a player some flexibility for completing hand and scoring other Elements (Mixed Shifted Chows costing 6 pts. normally goes with All Chows).

While others strategies require certain straightforwardness (having 4 or 5 Pairs you can still make 7 Pairs of All Pungs depending on circumstances).

Bits-and-Pieces Approaches

Last Tile + Chow Hand (6 pts.) = 3.2 %

Chow Hand + All Simples (4 pts.) = 8.5 %

Dragon Pung + Pung of Winds (Seat or Round) (4 pts.) = 7.5 %

It seems that one needs more substantial Scoring Elements.

Tricky 6 Points

When major Element in hand costs only 6 pts., you need at least 2+ pts. on the side.

Here is some statistics for WINNING hand containing as a major Element 6 points (unfortunately, hands containing 14-tile though costing less than 8 pts. are interesting but cannot be analyzed in this text).
